Red Light, Infrared, NIR & Far Infrared: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve been exploring modern wellness therapies, you’ve probably heard terms like red light therapy, infrared sauna, near-infrared (NIR), and far infrared (FIR)—sometimes used interchangeably. While they’re related, they’re not the same. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand what each one does and how they fit into a holistic wellness routine.
Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy uses visible red wavelengths, typically in the 620–660 nanometer (nm) range. These wavelengths primarily affect the surface layers of the skin. Red light is commonly used to support skin health, circulation, and cellular energy production. Because it doesn’t generate much heat, sessions are usually comfortable and relaxing, with the light absorbed directly by the skin.
Near-Infrared (NIR) Light
Near-infrared light sits just beyond visible red light, in the 700–900 nm range. You can’t see it, but your body definitely feels its effects. NIR penetrates more superficially into muscles, joints, and connective tissue. It’s commonly used to support recovery, mobility, and overall tissue health.
Mid-Infrared (MIR)
Mid-infrared (MIR) typically ranges from approximately 1,400 to 3,000 nanometers (nm) and provides moderate tissue penetration with gentle thermal effects, supporting increased circulation, reducing inflammation, and pain relief without the intense surface heating associated with far infrared.
Far Infrared (FIR)
Far infrared wavelengths are the longest, typically 3,000–10,000 nm. FIR is best known for its deep warming effect and is the most common type used in infrared saunas. It helps promote deep tissue detoxification, increased circulation, and stress relief. FIR penetrates more deeply into tissue than NIR and can help produce deep, radiant heat.
At the end of the day, these therapies aren’t competitors—they’re complementary. When used intentionally, they can work together to support your body’s natural healing and balance.
